Located at Calgary International Airport (YYC), the Aspire Amex Lounge transforms an existing lounge that had sat unused for a decade into a warm, contemporary retreat inspired by the Alberta Rockies. Working within a limited budget, the project embraces the existing space, retaining much of its original infrastructure while introducing carefully considered interventions that give the lounge a renewed identity.
Drawing on the convivial atmosphere of an après-ski lodge, the design combines rich wood finishes, earthy tones, layered lighting, and abundant planting. At the centre of the lounge, the existing fireplace was recapped and reimagined as the focal point of a generous seating area, where curved sofas encourage guests to gather and unwind. The result balances the practical demands of an airport lounge with the comfort and intimacy of a mountain retreat.
